So my son has been obsessed with poo and pee humor from the time he could string words together. In an effort to turn everything into a learning experience, I started referring to his unfortunate humor by its official name – scatological humor.
Scatology or coprology is the study of fecal excrement, in medicine, paleontology, or biology. It can also be defined as the obsession with excrement or excretory functions.
When we researched the definition, and my son and I pronounced the words, the fit of contagious giggles that ensued were epic. Personally, I have heard enough poo jokes to last me a lifetime or two. However, hearing coprology made my cheeks involuntarily turn up.
Now that he has the official term for the source of his jokes, he uses it constantly. He loves that there is a term and he has told me more than once that he really likes sounding out the words.
Most of the kids we know love to joke and talk about farts, pee, poop, etc. They are attracted to the forbidden and gross nature of this banter. But I think they enjoy the strong reaction scatology elicits from us.
However, by researching the actual official terms have opened up an interesting angle for my son to explore. The word, scatology, for example has the root word scat which is defined as animal feces.
So the other day, I overheard my son tell his friend, ” hold on, hold on… I’ve got some scatological funnies for you…” Now that, I didn’t mind hearing.
